The Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD) is a program through the
National Institute of General Medical Sciences,
part of the National Institute of Health.
It is directed at involving UCSD undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors
in paid, hands-on, bench research very early in their studies. Students will participate in an
initial summer training program (STP) to gain basic laboratory skills and learn the ways
of scientific thinking. Later, these students will be placed in active research
laboratories under the supervision of very successful mentors. These students will be
exposed to rich, scientific environments where they will gain experience, self
confidence, and the motivation to pursue a Ph.D. degree. During this time, students will
participate in a research project, seminars, workshops, a peer mentoring program, and
other regular laboratory activities, such as group meetings and journal clubs. Senior
students will be encouraged to take a graduate course in the Biomedical Science (BMS)
Ph.D. Program. Students that actively participate in the IMSD Program, who are highly
recommended by their mentors, and that pass a graduate course with a grade of B or above
will have guaranteed admission into the BMS Graduate Program at UCSD. IMSD scholars that
join the BMS Graduate Program will be supported for two years and aided in their
applications for independent funding to complete their Ph.D. requirements. In addition,
IMSD scholars will be educated on strategies to compete for faculty positions after
postdoctoral training. Students who choose to enroll into other Ph.D. programs will
receive assistance in preparing a successful application, including classes on preparing
for GRE testing.
