Through funding from the National Science Foundation, the University of California, San Diego offers a student support program designed to increase the diversity of the graduate student body and faculty ranks. The purpose of the program, as outlined by the NSF, is to increase the number of underrepresented students who complete doctoral programs in science, engineering, and math and enter faculty careers. Entering eligible doctoral students can apply for summer research opportunities, preferential access to on-campus housing, and first year AGEP Fellowships ($16,000). Continuing AGEP eligible students can apply for partial funding to attend professional conferences and meetings, a peer networking program, and participation in diversity outreach and recruitment activities, retention workshops, speakers and training sessions for information and skill development.
Participant requirements :
- This program is designed for African-American, American Indian, Latino/a, Mexican-American, Native Pacific Islander, and Puerto Rican students to increase diversity in graduate education.
- U.S. Citizens, Nationals or Permanent Residents
- Commitment to support student diversity issues and activities at UCSD
- Admitted to or currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in one of the following departments:
- Bioengineering
- Bioinformatics
- Biological Sciences
- Biomedical Sciences
- Chemistry & Biochemistry
- Computational Neurobiology
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Electrical & Computer Engineering
- Materials Science
- Mathematics
- Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
- Molecular Pathology
- Neurosciences
- Physics
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography
- Structural Engineering
