Applying for Graduate AdmissionThank you for considering UCSD for your graduate study. Before you start the online application:
If you have previously registered as a graduate student at UCSD at any time, whether or not you completed any course work, DO NOT FILE A NEW APPLICATION. Obtain a petition for readmission from your former department, group, or school graduate office. ContentsApplying for Graduate Admission
When to ApplyPlease observe the department deadline dates listed under Departmental/Program Information. Deadlines vary by department. Please note that most departments will consider applicants for the fall quarter only, which begins in September. For this reason, prospective applicants should begin the application process during the fall quarter of the preceding year. International applicants are advised to submit their completed applications as early as possible. One month in advance of the deadline is a good idea to allow sufficient time for evaluation of credentials and communication regarding missing documentation. Plan to take the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) in the fall to ensure the department receives scores in a timely manner. Check your department listing to determine which tests are required. What you will need to applyBelow are the items that you will need to make a complete application:
Please check the department requirements for additional or different requirements than what are listed above. How to Apply Online: Create an AccountAll application processes are online at the application website graduateapp.ucsd.edu . To create an online application account you will need a valid email address. This email address will be your login name. It will also be the primary line of communication between you and UCSD. Be sure to use an address that will not change: do not use a temporary address. The activation email and additional instructions to complete your registration will be sent to this address. In addition you will need to create a password to the account. Your password can be 5-12 characters long and cannot contain any spaces. You will need your email address and password every time you wish to access or modify any of your application information. If for some reason you are unable to use the online application process, do not submit a printout of the electronic application. For a limited number of applicants who cannot use the online application, a paper application is available. The paper application can only be obtained by contacting the department to which you seek admission. A complete explanation of your need to use a paper application must be provided before the application form will be sent. Please contact the department to which you would like to apply to request a paper application, department contact information . Application FeeThe non-refundable application fee schedule is as follows:
The application fee is the last step of the online application process. Applicants pay the application fee under the section titled "Begin Submit Process" and it must be paid using a major credit card: MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Discover, or JCB Card. Application Fee WaiverUS citizens and permanent residents only may request a waiver of the application fee. International applicants may not apply for the application fee waiver. The Application Fee Waiver request form is located near the end of the online application under "Begin Submit Process". Waivers are provided to applicants in the following situations:
All application fee waivers are granted provisionally. Applicants are required to send information and/or documentation to support the application fee waiver request. This documentation must be submitted within two weeks of application submission. Failure to submit the supporting documentation will result in a hold on the application until the documentation is received or the application fee is paid. Guidelines for eligibility and directions for submitting fee waiver documentation are at ogs.ucsd.edu/admissions/application/waiver . Applicants that qualify for the Application Fee Waiver may make up to three applications. To make additional applications please see “Multiple Applications” below. Multiple ApplicationsApplicants may make up to two applications with one application fee. Applicants may only make one application to the same department. To begin a second application, complete, pay for, and submit one application first. Once the first application is submitted, return to the application website, login using the same login name and password, and click on the “Start a New Application” button. Please do not use the back button on your browser or start a new account to begin the second application. These actions will result in a second charge of the application fee. Academic Records/TranscriptsOne set of official transcripts of record from each university/college level institution attended must be provided for each application submitted. Send the transcripts to the department(s) to which you are applying. Applicants with academic work in progress who expect to complete a degree program before the intended date of enrollment at UCSD must provide evidence of degree conferral and a final academic transcript as soon as it is available. Note: Transcripts and all other application materials will not be returned to applicants under any circumstances. Plan to order sufficient copies of your academic records to meet projected needs. Applicants who attended any campus of the University of California, including UCSD, must provide official transcripts of the UC course work. Transcripts from UCSD may be ordered by an applicant from the Office of the Registrar. There is no charge for UCSD transcripts of record sent to departments in support of an application for graduate study at UCSD. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) ScoresMost departments require GRE scores. Applicants are advised to take the GRE in the fall prior to the fall term for which admission is sought. Full consideration of the admission application can take place only after all required documents including test scores have been received. Some programs require additional tests or other alternatives. Check your department listing to determine which tests are required. Official GRE score reports must be sent to your intended department. When ordering your GRE score reports use UCSD's institution code 4836 and the department code that most closely resembles the department to which you are applying. The department codes are located at the back of the GRE bulletin. GRE score reports are mailed to the university four to six weeks after the test is administered. GRE applications may be obtained from the Educational Testing Service at www.gre.org . Consult the GRE website for full information. Other Test InformationInformation on the CBEST may be obtained at their website www.cbest.nesinc.com or by calling (916) 928-4001. Information on the CSET may be obtained at www.cset.nesinc.com or by calling (916) 928-4003. Information on the GMAT may be obtained at their website www.gmac.com/gmac . Statement of PurposeThe statement of purpose is part of the online application. The statement of purpose is very important and is given careful consideration in the selection process. Be concise and specific in preparing your statement: give information that will aid the selection committee in evaluating your potential for completing a graduate program of study at UCSD. Check the Guidelines and Department Specific Requirements or the department/program websites for specific directions on completing the statement of purpose. The online Statement of Purpose accepts limited formatting options. Regardless of the font size and style you have chosen in your word processing program, it will default to a standard font once pasted into the online text box. Bold and Italic text will not carry over. Tabs and indentations will not carry over, so please insert a blank line between paragraphs. Bulleted and numbered lists will carry over. For some departments/programs you may choose not to use the online statement of purpose. In this case use the paper form linked here; attach additional sheets if needed. Mail the paper statement of purpose directly to the department to which you are applying. Letters of RecommendationGenerally, departments/programs require three (3) letters of recommendation. Check the department recommendation guidelines for your department requirements. Online Letter of Recommendation Process Most departments prefer online letters of recommendation. For the online letter of recommendation process, you must provide the email address of each recommender. The recommenders will receive an email requesting a letter on your behalf. The most important aspect of letters of recommendation is that they be completed by individuals who are in a position to analyze your academic ability and potential for success in a rigorous graduate program. If you wish to waive your right to inspect the letters of recommendation, mark the appropriate space on the recommendation page of the online application. Enrolled students of UCSD are permitted to inspect letters of recommendation only if the waiver of access is not recorded online or the form has not been completed and returned. Letters of recommendation cannot be released to the applicant and cannot be forwarded to other institutions. Paper or Hard Copy Letters of Recommendation In the event that a recommender prefers hard copy letters or is unable to use the online letter of recommendation process, they may submit a paper letter of recommendation. Click here for the Paper Letter of Recommendation form . For paper letters also complete the Waiver of Letter of Recommendation Access form linked here. Submit the waiver form with each letter of recommendation form you give to a recommender. If a recommender does not submit a completed waiver form from you with the paper letter, it is assumed that you have elected not to waive access to the contents. Recommenders should send completed paper letters of recommendation directly to the major department indicated by you on the recommendation form. To avoid misdirection of the forms, enter your name, the name of your proposed major department, and the campus mail code in the space provided on each recommendation form. You can expedite the process by also giving each recommender an addressed, stamped envelope to return the letter.
