What is the difference between the Student Housing Opportunity for Recruitment Enhancement (SHORE) Program and Associated Residential Community Housing (ARCH)?

ARCH Operations makes on-campus housing available to students through the Housing application process. Housing is offered to students based on the date a student applies for housing and the availability of apartments. The approximate waiting time for an apartment is 6-36 months. Participants in the SHORE Program bypass the waitlist and are guaranteed housing for normative time to degree plus one year.  Students receiving housing via the wailist are offered housing for a 2-year fixed term agreement.

How many housing offers will I receive?

You will be contacted by the ARCH Office and be given one (1) offer of housing through SHORE.  The offer will be as close to your requested move-in date as possible, but may be as early as 2 weeks prior to your requested date, and as late as September 30th.  The location will be based on availability.  The rent start date and your actual move in date may not be the same.  If you decline this offer, you will not receive another offer.  Please consider this carefully.

What if I have previously submitted an ARCH application?

If you have previously submitted an ARCH application and decide to accept the SHORE offer, your name will be removed from the waitlist. However, if you decline SHORE, your name will remain on the ARCH waitlist. No further action is required on your part.

Will I receive information on my roommate prior to moving in?

Yes.  You and your roommate will receive an email with both of your email addresses.  You may choose to contact each other to coordinate the move-in process.

What if my roommate and I do not get along?

SHORE Roommates are matched primarily according to same gender and requested move-in date.  Every effort will be made by the ARCH Office and the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) to assist you in resolving difficult situations.  Please contact ARCH and OGS for mediation.  (You may search for a current resident who is seeking a roommate.  If selected by that resident, you may move into his/her apartment.  You will maintain your SHORE status.)

Am I responsible for the entire amount of rent if my roommate moves in later than I do?

No. When your lease begins, you are responsible for one-half of the apartment rent regardless of when your roommate moves in.

What happens if my roommate moves out?

You and your roommate must both sign and submit a 30-day Notice of Intent to Vacate form to the ARCH Office. You will become responsible for the entire amount of the rent after your roommate moves out, and until a new roommate moves in.  You may select your own roommate, or elect to have the Residental Services Office select one for you, thereby releasing you of financial responsibility for the entire amount of the rent.  (Roommates must be eligible to reside in ARCH.)

When do I start paying rent?

Rent begins on the start date of your rental agreement. Please note that your rental agreement start date and your arrival date may not be the same!

How long will I be allowed to stay in housing?

Policy states that SHORE students may remain in campus housing only one year beyond expiration of their normative time to the degree (the length of time which has been established by the Graduate Council for the time period in which students, under normal circumstances, are expected to complete the requirements for the degree). Please contact your department for the established time for your specific program.

May I choose between the North, South or Central Mesa sections of the Mesa Residential Apartments and the One Miramar Street Apartments?

You may designate with area you prefer.  The Residential Services Offices will try to meet your request; however, this will depend on apartment availability and your requested need date.

Is it possible to transfer to a North, South or Central Mesa apartment at a later time?

Yes. You may complete a new application and have your name placed on the waitlist.  (You may search for a current resident who is seeking a rommmate.  If selected by that resident, you may move into his/her apartment.  You will maintain your SHORE status.)

Will I need a parking permit for parking at the complex?

Yes. The Residential Services Office will issue a parking permit to you. This parking permit is not valid on campus. Please call Transportation Services at (858) 534-4223 for further information regarding on-campus parking.

Are there any furnishings in the apartment?

Each apartment contains carpeting, blinds/drapes, a range and refrigerator. No other furnishings are included.

Is there a place to store my furnishings if I ship them before my arrival?

Sorry, facilities are not available to store any items prior to your arrival.

May I keep pets?

Based upon prior written approval from the Residentail Services Office, you may keep up to two cats (cats must remain indoors), caged birds, or fish in aquariums with less than 30 gallon capacity. A Pet Addendum and a $250 pet deposit are required for cats. Sorry, no other animals are permitted in the apartment facility.  Please remember to indicate if you have pets (or prefer not to live in an apartment with pets) on the Roommate Match Information Sheet.
