Advancement Dates

There has been some confusion regarding the advancement to candidacy exam and actual advancement dates on transcripts. In order for any academic event to occur, a student must be enrolled/registered. This means that an advancement can only be posted to the academic record during a quarter of registration. The long-standing practice, which the Dean now reaffirms, is that a student may take an advancement exam during the summer or between quarters to accommodate the availability of faculty. We will continue the following practices:

  • Recording the actual date of the exam on the academic record/transcript.

  • Recording the advancement date as the first day of the first quarter of enrollment following the exam (for students who take the exam between quarters or during the summer).

  • Students who take the exam during the quarter will have the actual date of the exam listed on their academic record/transcript. The date of the advancement will be recordedĀ as the date the form is received by OGS.

  • Students receiving a CPHIL as part of the advancement will continue to have the award date as the last day of the quarter.
